Taylor Takes Round 2 at TORC Opener - 60 PRO Wins Since 1999

Belvidere, IL (May 18, 2009) - Scott Taylor brought his Skyjacker Suspensions, Auto Trans Design, BFGoodrich Tires ,Ford F-150 to Texas looking to build on his late season successes from 2008. After his Saturday night win, Taylor Racing continues to prove that the seven-time champion is looking to add more to the record books. The Round 2 victory was Scott’s sixtieth’s PRO victory since 1999.

New for the Taylor Racing team is the addition of Dustin Pence handling the chores of race prep. At the track, longtime chief mechanic Mike Kasch is at the helm, with the assistance of new crew chief Kevin Pence. The veteran team members should keep the team in championship contention all year.

Friday afternoon saw the Skyjacker, BFGoodrich, Ford use the two practice sessions to fine tune the King Shocks suspension. After a few adjustments, Scott qualified the truck 8th fastest out of the field of fifteen PRO-2WD trucks. Not the best starting position, but at Texas, you race the track as much as the other racers. There is a lot strategy involved at clay tracks like Texas. It’s not all about speed, keeping your BFGoodrich tires performing throughout the entire race is key. You don’t want to be too aggressive and wear out your tires too soon.

Round 1
The opening round of the PRO-2WD TORC season saw implementation of a rolling start and a mandatory caution midway through the twenty lap main event. The race got off cleanly as Scott was looking to hold his own, and waiting for the second half of the race to make his charge to the front. Within a few laps, Scott was having traction issues. This left the Skyjacker BFGoodrich Ford with a run that ended in sixth place. The truck came back to the pits with all it body panels intact, but the team knew changes had to be made to get Taylor Racing to the front of the pack.

Overnight the team made changes to the front suspension and a gear change looking to improve the rear bite of the truck.

On Saturday, the day began with the competitors wondering if there would be a Round 2. The Fort Worth area was hit with early morning heavy rain and lighter precipitation until mid afternoon. The track crews from the Speedway and TORC persevered and had the track ready to race by 8:30pm.

Round 2
The starting grid was determined by the finishing order of Round 1. Then the top six finishers had their order inverted. This put the familiar #8 Skyjacker ATD BFGoodrich Tires Ford F-150 on pole. When the green flag waved, Scott put all the RoushYates horsepower into the ATD transmission and grabbed the lead. The clay and dirt track was hard packed and tacky in some areas, and loose and muddy in others. Throughout the twenty-lap event he was under constant pressure from Rob MacCachern and Ricky Johnson. The BFGoodrich tires handled the varying track conditions extremely well, as Scott never relinquished the lead. Scott not only won Round 2, his Skyjacker BFGoodrich Ford turned the fastest lap, earning the team the OAKLEY BOMB award.

“This was an entire team win,” remarked Scott Taylor. “ From Mike Kasch, Kevin Pence, Dustin Pence, Holly Kulinski, Hope Kincaid, Steve Oman and my family, without them this isn’t possible. A special thanks goes out to Skyjacker Suspensions, BFGoodrich Tires, Ford Truck, Automatic Transmission Design and Roush/Yates , they believe in our team, and we responded with a win tonight.”

After two rounds of racing in the Traxxas Off-Road Championship Series presented by AMSOIL, Scott Taylor is in second place in the chase for the PRO-2WD championship.

You can relive Taylor Racing’s winning performance on ESPN2, Sunday, May 24, at 11am eastern.
