Taylor Gets Back in the Groove – Takes Second at TORC Opener
@ Red Bud
Belvidere, IL ( June 1, 2011) - After thirty-two years Scott Taylor
made his return to REDBUD MX, but instead of a 150 horsepower buggy,
the seven time PRO-2 champion had his 900 horsepower RoushYates
powered Miller Welders BFGoodrich Ford F-150. Since Taylor’s last
appearance in southwest Michigan, the landscape of short course
off-road racing has gone through many changes, but one constant
throughout the years has been Scott Taylor. After watching his
performance on the track this weekend, the Northern Illinois native
is still at the top of his game.

Before Scott Taylor could take to the track, Jason Smith and his
TORC track team put in overtime as Mother Nature was relentless with
heavy rains throughout the weekend. The opening round of the Traxxas
TORC Series presented by AMSOIL was scheduled for Saturday
afternoon, but just as the PRO-2 field was ready to go racing, the
clouds let loose with a heavy downpour ending the day’s activities.
The next morning TORC delayed the start of the day’s racing and
cancelled practice so track workers could prepare the track for
competition. The one mile long track wound its way through the
valley as it made its way on and around one of the most respected
motocross tracks in North America. The large and steep elevation
changes of the Red Bud layout hasn’t been seen in short course
racing since the days of racing at a ski resort in northwest
Wisconsin.
When the PRO-2 field finally made its warm-up laps, the track was in
incredible condition considering much of it was underwater just few
hours earlier. The rolling start had the #8 Miller Welders
BFGoodrich Tires Ford F-150 in the third row. Within a couple of
laps, the track was drying out and now the corners that were muddy
and slippery during the previous race were now dry and getting
rough. The track was really becoming a small piece of Baja.
With the track conditions changing, Taylor quickly moved up to
fourth place by the third lap, just behind Bryce Menzies, and Rob
MacCachern. The race order stayed the same right up to the halfway
point mandatory caution. The final eight laps would determine who
land on the podium.
When green flag racing resumed, Taylor had his sights set on Menzies.
Two laps later the seven-time champion moved into the runner-up
spot. By now MacCachern had opened up a sizable lead, but that
didn’t stop Taylor from closing the gap. When the checkered flag was
waved, MacCachern came across the line in first, with Scott Taylor
in second, with Mike Oberg rounding out the top three.
“This is a great way to start out the season,” noted Scott Taylor.
“Today was the first time in the truck since Fall Crandon. Without
any practice this weekend, we missed a little on the setup. Crandon
is next and I’ll have something for Rob for sure.”
Look for Scott Taylor to continue his quest for an unprecedented
eighth PRO-2 title when the TORC Series heads to Crandon
International Off-Road Raceway. When it comes to racing at Crandon,
Taylor’s record is unmatched, countless wins in four different
divisions, including twelve World Championship Rings, one Chairman’s
Cup, and two BorgWarner Trophies.
